BACKGROUND
Laurie Hernandez is widely recognized for her exceptional talents and contributions in the realms of gymnastics, literature, and advocacy. Known affectionately as the “human emoji” for her vibrant facial expressions during her captivating floor exercise routines and admired for her elegance and artistry on the balance beam, Laurie has carved a distinguished path for herself beyond the Olympic stage.
Since bringing home the Gold and Silver medals at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, Laurie has Subsequently, Laurie’s versatility and passion led her to clinch the coveted Mirrorball trophy on “Dancing with the Stars” Season 23. In 2017, her first book, “I Got This: To Gold and Beyond,” was published, chronicling her remarkable experiences and landing a spot on the New York Times Best Sellers list. In 2018, she released a children’s picture book “She’s Got This” with Harper Collins Children’s Books, also a New York Times Best Seller, while serving as a KPMG’s Literacy Champion to promote readership as a path to leadership. Further adding to her list of accolades, Mattel created the Laurie Hernandez “Shero” Barbie, underscoring her impact and influence.
She is a second generation American, as her grandparents are from Puerto Rico, making her the first U.S. born Latina to make the U.S. team since 1984. Laurie was a Gymnastics analyst for NBC’s Peacock and the Olympic Channel for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and the National Dog Show. Laurie is a current sophomore studying drama at NYU Tisch School of Arts in NYC, while continuing as a Gymnastics analyst for NBC.
Acting is one of her biggest passions and since 2016, she has done numerous cameos, voiceovers, and co-hosted American Ninja Warrior Junior. Laurie speaks across the country at college campuses and corporate gatherings about perseverance and gratitude while following one’s passions. As a passionate advocate for mental health awareness, Laurie has collaborated with several campaigns and initiatives, aiming to foster support and increase awareness for individuals facing mental health challenges. Laurie’s multifaceted endeavors exemplify her dedication to both her craft and her commitment to making a positive impact on society.
