An Olympic medalist in freestyle skiing will serve as grand marshal for Saturday’s Vulcan Victory Torchlight Parade, St. Paul Winter Carnival organizers announced Thursday.
Nick Goepper of Indiana is a U.S. Olympic slopestyle bronze medalist.
Goepper secured the 2014 AFP World Slopestyle title and was part of the U.S. Slopestyle team at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, where he won a bronze medal.
While in town, Goepper plans to hit the slopes at Afton Alps in his free time.
The Vulcan Victory Torchlight Parade starts at 5:30 p.m. Saturday and travels up Fifth Street from Lowertown to Rice Park.
After the parade, Vulcanus Rex and his Krewe will overthrow Boreas — and drive winter from the realm — on the steps of the St. Paul Central Library, across from Rice Park. The production will be followed by fireworks over the Mississippi River, launched from Raspberry Island, next to the Wabasha Street Bridge.
